A medical exam may be necessary
to rule out any neurologic, vascular or hormonal disorders. History
of smoking, high blood pressure or drug abuse also need to be
eliminated.
Blood and urine tests may help indicate hormonal, cholesterol,
blood sugar levels as well as thyroid, liver and kidney functioning.
A CBC (Complete Blood Count) will indicate your overall health.
A Urine Test is used to check for excessive sugar content (diabetes)
as well as testosterone deficiency and kidney problems.
A doctor can also perform Erectile Functioning Tests. These
examine the nerves and blood vessels in the penis and pelvic
area. An ultrasound evaluates blood flow, venous leakage or other
flow problems.
An erection can be induced by injecting prostaglandin, a hormone-like
substance naturally produced by the body. Ultrasound is afterwards
used to detect vascular dilation and blood pressure. These results
are compared to when the penis is flaccid.
A prostate exam can be done by digital exam to check the size
of the prostate. An enlarged prostate may interfere with blood
flow and nerve impulses to the penis.
A large number of men suffer impotence secondary to psychological
problems. These may be temporary or long-term. Suffering Erectile
Dysfunction at this point may add to the problems and interfere
more with sexual functioning. Psychological evaluation may help
uncover these problems and may be used in conjunction with medical
treatment. |
